Grass Fed Farming helps the Environment:

The taste of our grass-fed lamb results in a combination and concentration of nutrients found on the farm.

The Terrior of our land is a result of

  • The gentle rolling hills of northern Orange County
  • The micro-climates on the farm
  • The properties of the soil that have never had herbicides or pesticides applied
  • The spring fed water that forms the head waters of the Eno River

All these factors contribute to the award winning flavor of Captain John’s Lamb. Our lamb is the ultimate expression of the farm since they literally consume the terroir of the farm.

The vast grasslands of the Captain John S. Pope Farm consist of a complex mixture of annual and perennial grasses, brassicas, and legumes. By rotating grazing throughout the seasons we are able to sustain the complexity that

  • Supports biodiversity
  • Improves soil fertility
  • Eliminates waste disposal associated with confinement
  • Eliminates potential E.coli contamination

Animal Welfare:

Captain John’s lambs are always grass-fed and free range meaning that they always

  • Have access to natural forages, fresh air and clean well water
  • Have lower stress levels
  • Are humanely treated
  • Have never been given antibiotics
  • Have the freedom to roam

As Mary Jane used to say, “Sometimes you have to go slow to get there faster”.

    • In otherwords, forcing the lambs with hormones , antibiotics and grain will only benefit in the short run.
